DIHI offers Systems, Healthcare, AI, Product, and Ethics (SHAPE) focused internships and practicums that offer hands-on experiences for students eager to explore the intersection of healthcare innovation, technology, and leadership. Our interns contribute across a variety of focus areas, including product management, qualitative research, and AI ethics. Duke MBA interns have gained valuable insights into the business of healthcare, project management strategies, and the complexities of bringing new ideas to life in clinical environments. Undergraduate product management students have collaborated with us through Duke’s innovation-focused institutes (e.g. the Christensen Family Center for Innovation), contributing fresh ideas and developing practical skills. In addition, interns have supported research on scaling AI solutions to new health systems, framing standards for identifying AI bias, and ensuring responsible deployment. Others have helped design prompts and processes for industry partners seeking to apply AI insights and innovation methods. These experiences provide students with real-world exposure to healthcare challenges while equipping them with the tools to drive meaningful change.
